You can keep it somewhere in a corner of your screen while your working and neet to jot down some data.
It is designed specifically for this function so it has no advanced features you'll find in a lot of text editors.
The window can be made small enough to not be in the way and you can save and load your notes to a separate textfile.

This method is probably used in animated gif optimizers but can also be used to compress (non-sequential) images in a program for instance.
