POV-ray is a program that "creates three-dimensional, photo-realistic images using a rendering technique called ray-tracing."
It takes its input from text files which means you have to create a description of your 3D-scene in a way that is very much like writing a computer program.
I have used it to make 3D graphics for multimedia projects (cdroms) and screensavers.
Most of them feature VIC, a figure so blobby he had to be raytraced.
